Nascido em berço aristocrata, Vicente da Câmara Pereira entra no fado ainda jovem, assinando o primeiro contrato com a editora Valentim de Carvalho aos 22 anos. Intérprete do fado castiço, tradicional de Lisboa, era um amante do improviso e destacava-se pela voz timbrada, naturalidade e a utilização de melismas (alteração da nota de uma sílaba de um texto enquanto está a ser cantada), algo que não era habitual no fado. O seu maior sucesso foi composto entre 1955 e 1956, num quarto de hotel em Santarém, e tornou-se um dos temas ícones do fado castiço.
